Duke Ellington’s Jazz Nutcracker

The Hartford Conservatory's 2008 performances of Duke Ellington's Jazz Nutcracker , the eighth annual presentation of this exciting jazz interpretation of the classic Nutcracker, will be held December 5-7 at the Hoffman Auditorium, Saint Joseph College. Ellington's rhythmic score and a combination of dance styles recalling Harlem of the 1940s – jazz, tap, swing, modern, ballroom and ballet – create a lively and emotional performance that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. In addition to being handicap accessible, the Hoffman Auditorium provides a comfortable theater experience that effectively showcases the unique and interesting choreography and creative costuming of this Nutcracker.

The Hartford Conservatory's presentation of Duke Ellington's jazz version of the original Tchaikovsky score is unique. The prestigious Lincoln Center has periodically presented Ellington's 35-minute score as The Harlem Nutcracker, and other venues have incorporated parts of the Nutcracker suite of dances. However, no other presentation includes the entire Nutcracker story along with Ellington's distinctive jazz arrangement. The dance is choreographed by Darcie Froman, a Conservatory graduate. Live music is provided by the New England Jazz Ensemble Septet under the direction of Walter Gwardyak, the Conservatory's accomplished Dean of Music who adapted Ellington's 35-minute score for the two-hour dance program.
